10 Biggest Mistakes Breastfeeding Moms Make

I love this article.  I nearly gave up breastfed my son but my own determination helped me through it and I thanked the Lord for giving me enough breast milk for my son till 13 months.  My daughter still on fully breast milk and she is now 9 months and just started solid 2 weeks ago.  My target to give my daughter fully breast milk till she is 2 years old.

Article taken from theStir

For some women, it seems breastfeeding is simple, clear, and obvious. But for others, every day they make it is a victory, each drop is a struggle, and the act itself becomes fraught with images of failure, sadness, and tons of tears and frustration.

Laila Ali, new mom to her second child, a daughter, told People that she made a huge mistake with her son when she pumped a bottle early on so her husband could feed the baby. After that, he preferred bottles, so she had to pump them the whole first year.

There are a few reasons a woman can't breastfeed, but the vast majority are able to do it and succeed at it. The problem is, a lot of people don't know that much about the act, thinking it's natural and will come to them or that someone will teach them in the hospital. While they do help you learn a bit, the secrets and mistakes are all things no one teaches you unless you read a book or two.

So, here are the 10 Biggest Mistakes of Breastfeeding:

1. Not asking for help: Breastfeeding is natural and the most basic way to feed your baby, but it isn't easy for many women. Lactation consultants exist for a reason. If you can't afford to pay a lactation consultant, then ask mom friends who have been through it. They will have tips on increasing supply, soothing sore nipples, making sure baby has had enough, and all the other questions you may have. They've been there, too.

2. Assuming you don't have enough milk: Your breasts are designed to feed your baby. Don't get paranoid and give up because it seems like your baby is so hungry. Babies are so hungry. Their main job is to eat. And eat. And eat. And eat.

3. Being scared in public: Don't worry too much about the prudes and judgy folks who don't like moms who nurse in public. If it really bothers you, buy a cover. But don't assume that they -- and their prude-y judgemental crap -- are correct. They aren't. You are. Be confident in that.

4. Thinking you can't because you work: I was lucky enough to nurse both my babies for one year and 2.5 years while I was home with them, but many, many working moms are able to make breastfeeding work by pumping and bringing home bottles. It works and women everywhere are doing it.

5. Wanting to "include" dad: By all means, include dad. Let him hold the baby or bring him/her to you to nurse. But only mom can make breast milk and it's the best thing for the baby. Don't fall into the formula trap because dad wants to feel "part of it all." Your milk supply will dwindle and you won't make it.

6. Not teaching your husband: Just because dad can't do it himself doesn't mean he can't be part of it at all. My husband kept detailed charts of when our baby ate, slept, and pooped and they helped a lot at each of her doctor's appointments. And helped me keep track of which boob was which when I was exhausted and sleep-deprived.

7. Being bullied: There are naysayers everywhere. You will be told he is too old to breastfeed (at seven months), that your daughter isn't in the 99th percentile, so she isn't getting enough food, and that it's obscene and will wreck your boobs. Don't listen. For breastfeeding to work, you need to do it and you need to do it often. Others will say what they want. Your job is to ignore them.

8. Forget it's for you, too: Babies aren't the only ones who win with breastfeeding. Mom also gets the benefit of a flat tummy and some protection from breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and osteoporosis later in life. It's a win all around!

9. Relying on the clock: The clock isn't what tells you the baby is done. He or she is. I made this mistake early on and ended up with a low supply with my first. This forced me to take Fenugreek, wake up even while she was sleeping to pump, and do all kinds of things to fix the supply issues I'd set up from the beginning. It's easy to avoid. Just don't watch the clock.

10. Giving formula too soon: If you give formula too early, your supply will dwindle. In those first six weeks, try not to give up on nursing too quickly. Then your supply will be strong and you can do what you choose.

New Improved Breast Milk Storage Bag from Fabulous Mom

I received the new improved storage bag today.  Complimentary from Fabulous Mom.  I really never thought I would hear from Vivian again and I was surprised when I received an email from her.

Anyway, the first impression when I received the package, I was a little disappointed because it is the same old packaging and I could not help myself thinking of the old storage bag. (Anyway, I told Vivian about it & apparently the admin staff in the factory make a mistake for printing the old packaging.)

So, I am now at bag no#8 and all of them filled with 12 oz of breast milk.  Guess what? So far so good - no leakage at all.

Nevertheless, I am still reserved till I finished the whole box.

So stay tuned!

Box No. # 2 : 8 leakage bags
Box No. # 3 : 6 leakage bags
Box No. # 4 : 11 leakage bags (extremely disappointed)
Box No. # 5 (replacement from Fabulous Mom) : 3 leakage bags

To read my past post on this Jingle Jungle Breast Milk Storage Bag, Part 1, Part 2 , Part 3 & Part 4

On my last bag of Box No# 5, I received an email from Vivian Foo (the founder of fabulousmom.com) saying :

"We have just received our new batch of stock, which is improved.

Following your feedback, our manufacturing team has done lots of investigations and we hold a few meetings with people from different departments to find out the cause of leakage.  We found out that it could be due to the Ray Sterilisation method we adopted that cause the material to be stiffer and cause leakage when it’s going through temperature change.  However, this is categorised as isolated case as the same material and sterilisation method had been used over a decade.

However, a new material is used for our new batch. Numerous test have been done on this new material over the months before actual production actually.  This material is recommended by FDA for long term freezing (in FDA’s newsletter Sep 2010), and our manufacturing partner has been doing test on it to see if it could withstand sterilisation and temperature change process – so far they are happy with the result.  New batch has got the BPA free certification too.  "

She offered me a box of this new improved storage bag to try.

Stay tuned for the updates!

Punishment.......

It been nearly 1.5 months JC never watch television. The first 3 days, he tried his luck by asking me numerous times for television and I reminded him why I did not allow him to watch – it is because he throws the lollipop on the floor when I asked him to place it on the table.

On the 4th day, he never asked for television anymore. He asks for books to do revision, he tells story from his book collection, play with his Thomas, colouring or playing chasing game with JE.

Overall, I am happy with the result. He is no longer a couch potato. He is more obedient maybe because he gets my attention, we play together with JE – make me feel he does not feel neglected anymore.

But sometime, boys ALWAYS will be boys – testing my patience all the times, climbing up and down like a monkey, trying the impossible, playing tricks on his daddy & me.

Sago Gula Melaka

I made super mean sago gula melaka. :P

I love this dessert since 1998. I fall in love with this dessert when my mom first introduce to me, back then I eaten 3 bowls of these right after dinner; that was my first and last time eating it because the shop closed down after on fire.

I came across this recipe and decided to give it a try.

The gula melaka I made exactly the same as my mom made, it gave me a flash back on my childhood.

CoddleLife Glass Milk Bottle

I brought these wide neck glass milk bottles on 7th May 2011. The reason I choose wide neck so that both of my children can continue with their existing teats. I have waited for 4 months for their stock to arrive.

The one with silicon wrap is belong to JC and the other is belong to JE. I found out that glass bottles are easy heat up compare to plastic bottles.

So far so good, the glass milk bottles still exist.

These CoddleLife glass milk bottle only sell in certain organic stores or online stores. I brought them in “Just Life” organic store without any discount. If you purchase it during baby expo, you can get 20% discount and certain online stores give between 10% to 20% discount.

Beautiful Story

A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said: 'Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even 1 year old and I'm pregnant again. I don't want kids so close together.

So the doctor said: 'Ok and what do you want me to do?'

She said: 'I want you to end my pregnancy, and I'm counting on your help with this.'

The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady: 'I think I have a better solution for your problem. It's less dangerous for you too.'

She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.

Then he continued: 'You see, in order for you not to have to take care 2 babies at the same time, let's kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we're going to kill one of them, it doesn't matter which one it is. There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.

The lady was horrified and said: 'No doctor! How terrible! It's a crime to kill a child! 'I agree', the doctor replied. 'But you seemed to be OK with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.'

The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point.

He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that's already been born and one that's still in the womb. The crime is the same!

If you agree, please SHARE. Together we can help save precious lives!

"Love says I sacrifice myself for the good of the other person. Abortion says I sacrifice the other person for the good of myself..." Jesus sacrificed Himself for the good of sinners! That's perfect love! -unkown

JE's Solid Food

JE is 7 months today and I have yet start her on solid food as she has not show any development sign that she is ready for solid food such as the ability to sit upright unassisted, loss of the thrust reflex, the ability to grasp and bring objects/food to the mouth, an interest in food such as watching and mimicking others eating, and grabbing at food that others have. If you are confused when to start your baby on solid, read this article from connectedMom.

I have been thinking what will be JE first food. Avocado! I found this when I browsing through my recipe bible for baby which I consolidate during JC’s time.  I need to go shopping for avocado this weekend and try this recipe on her and see how she react.

Avocado! Is it a fruit or a vegetable?
Whatever it is it has incredible powers. Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat the ‘good’ type of fat which helps prevent heart disease and can help lower bad cholesterol. The essential fats found in avocados are the building blocks of beautiful skin.. They are also one of the best sources of vitamin E which helps with wound healing a good complexion and strong immune system. Oh – and they also have the highest protein content of any fruit…

Avocados are sometimes thought of as a vegetable but they are actually a fruit and contain more nutrients than any other fruit - perfect for weaning baby. They are also rich in monounsaturated fat, the ‘good type’ of fat which helps prevent heart disease. The high calorie content of avocado makes it a good food for growing babies. Avocado is a great source of the free radical fighting antioxidant vitamin E, which also boosts the immune system. Avocado is easy to digest.

Ingredients
1 small avocado

Method
Cut a small avocado in half, remove the stone, scoop out the flesh and mash together with a little of your baby’s usual milk.

Another day of surprise!

We were at the kid zone last Sunday, as usual JE was centre of attraction. They were about 4 kids surrounding my hubby and they started to touch JE’s chubby cheeks. JC used his tiny hands to cup his sister cheeks and said “Hey! Do not touch my mei-mei!”

I smiled!

Sepang Gold Coast

Sepang Gold Coast - not really what I am expected but it was a new experience for JC. He is so excited and so happy when we reached. He cannot wait to touch the sand and to feel the water.

It was low tide when we arrived at 10 am. We walked out and saw so many crabs running around and eating. JC saw a pink jelly fish, at first I thought it is plastic can where people throw but when I take a closer look, I was shocked and lucky JC did not touch it.

He built sand castle with his daddy and swin in the sea for the first time. His energy was so much that day.

He had sun burn. JE had sun burn as well. JE was excited too, she did not allow me to sit down. She wanted to be carrying around and walk around.

Sorry no pictures because mommy forgot the camera.

Storm... sunshine???

I have been very busy with work lately till no time to sleep. I got quite a number of projects on hand.

I have been very emotional lately and wonder when will see sunshine again. I do understand that life is not a bed of roses but sometime things came unexpectedly.

I am hoping and praying for extra strength to carry on, to believe sunshine will always be there after the storm and most important is having faith.

Fast Forward Mode

Dear Diary

5-April-2011
Fast forward mode is not good for me and my body as well. I had to complete 4 projects in a day and moreover 2 of the projects without proper infrastructure make me even stress. I was trying very hard to setup the infrastructure so that it can make my life easier but because of setup error/CD error/PC error, it delays the progress. By the end of the business day, I still struggle with the infrastructure. I was totally at stress mode and I cannot think straight.

I still had to rush to pick-up my children and then quickly rushed home and try to setup the same infrastructure at my home PC and prayed so hard that it will work. By the time it really worked, it already 1am in the morning. Oh gosh, I need to pump my milk and by the time I ready to sleep, it was already 2.15am.

By about 5 am, JE was crying for milk. I need to wake-up and warm up the milk and fed her. By the time she finished up the milk, it was already 5.30am – it was the time I usually wake-up.

Pump milk, washed all milk bottles, sterilise them, prepared JC’s lunch box, prepared his shower bag, prepared JE shower bag, packed my breast pump, packed my notebook and get myself ready, it was already 7.45am.

Time to wake JC up, reason with him why he needs to go to school and wait for him to packed things such as his choo-choo train, his yellow car, Pooh, Tigger, Allie, his favourite blanket and a pillow – reach the car at 8.15am.

6-April-2011
I was down with slight fever.  Still go to work because still have unfinished projects on hand.

7-April-2011
Fever never subside instead it keep on rising to 38.7 officially high fever accompany with heavy head and all my body & my bones were aching. Still go to work because got report writing need to be done.

Then received an urgent project and need to be complete by today.

I had a nap during lunch time and after waking up I was feeling half-dead.  I went to see doctor (GP) because I afraid it might be dengue fever.

Waited for 2 hours only managed to see the doctor. Sigh. She told me have to wait till day 4 and if fever still high then only go for platelet test. I was given 3 types of medicine.

Indication - Penicillin antibiotic.

Fetal Risk - No reports linking it’s use to congenital defects.

Breast Feeding - Excreted into milk in small amounts. No adverse effects observed, however it can modify the bowel flora and interfere with the interpretation of culture results in exposed infants.

Indication - Analgesic, antipyretic.

Fetal Risk - Crosses the placenta. In therapeutic doses it is safe for short-term use. No well controlled human data, but there has been reports that maternal toxic doses can cause fetal liver toxicity, kidney abnormalities and intrauterine death.

Suggested possible association with congenital dislocation of the hip and club foot if used anytime during pregnancy.

Exposure to large doses of acetaminophen and propoxyphene throughout pregnancy can cause craniofacial and digital anomalies and infant withdrawal symptoms.

Breast Feeding - Excreted into milk in small amounts. Safe in breast feeding but reported single case of maculopapular rash in exposed infants.

Cinnarizine (for giddiness)
Indication - Antihistamine.

Fetal Risk - No adequate human data, but Use of antihistamines in the last two weeks of pregnancy may cause retrolental fibro plasia in premature infants.

Breast Feeding - Not recommended for use in nursing mothers due to the potential adverse effects on infants like unusual excitement or irritability.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Call me paranoid.  I rather be safe than sorry. I always check my medicine before I consumed them especially when I am breastfeeding.

Can you spot the different?

Can you see the different?

Left milk bottle consists of breast milk expressed on 7 April 2011 - which I was down with high fever, body ache, bone ache and a heavy head.  It looks like only foremilk without hindmilk.

Right milk bottle consists of breast milk expressed on 8 April 2011 - which I feel much better (without medication).  It consists of foremilk (the thinner milk the baby gets first, which has a lower fat content); and hindmilk, the high-fat, creamier milk.

It make a lot of different in breast milk quality when I am well and not well.  I should not work that crazy anymore or else I am putting JE's health in jeopardy.

I am sorry JE.

Some human are NOT HUMAN!

I am very upset.  Upset about how sick the world is getting.  Upset about how manufacturer want to earn more profit to the extend creating fake food that is hazardous to human kind.

You can read more on
Be a smart consumer and get knowledgeable - How to identify fake chicken eggs?

Taken from Citizen's Blog

Now it is no longer reading the label.  Now is all about how to purchase genuine food without hazardous to our body.  Sooner or later, it is the best to go "STONE AGE" - plant your own vegetables, raise your own chickens, fishes and etc.

The world is getting sick and very unhuman being!

Have you thought of it?

Brilliant idea.

Anger

Lately, I get angry a lot, get mad a lot, get frustrated a lot as well.  It is like I am slowly turning into a monster.  I do not like the way I am behaving now because I scare my children a lot especially JC.  I did a google search on anger and I found this interesting article that I would like to share.

I want to change to be a better person and to handle situations differently which will make my life/day with my family member brighter.  Cross my finger!

There is something we can do about Anger. It is called Anger Management.
Anger Management is a set of tools to help us deal with anger that may be getting out of control.

What Anger does to the body
When we repress anger, we hurt ourselves. Anger raises our cholesterol level, releases cortisol that damages the arteries and suppresses our immune system.

Repeated and uncontrolled expressions of anger have been linked to heart disease, cancer, obesity and strokes. There is evidence linking suppressed rage to breast cancer in men and women.

Research suggests that women with breast cancer have an inability to see themselves supported by others; they are more likely to internalize feelings of anger. There is also evidence linking depression and anger to autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, some thyroid diseases and lupus erythematosus.

Over the course of time, Anger can kill!

Executive Functions Control Anger
Angry people are at the mercy of their amygdala, the remnant of our emotional reptilian brain.

This is the part of us that can be locked in an emotional rut, flooding the body with stress hormones when we fly off the handle.

Resilient people who can manage their anger and remain optimistic despite life's ups and downs usually make rapid recoveries from stress or unfortunate events.

They have learned to use the executive functions of the brain to calm down the amygdala. They have assimilated a set of anger management tips that can help them negotiate a way out of self-sabotaging thoughts and feelings. They understand the power of the brain.

Anger Control Tips
1. Recognize and accept your anger. Some people are unaware of their anger responses; their sense of hostility is so pervasive they cannot see it as anger.

Understanding how you react when angry is the critical first step to anger management.
Ask yourself these questions:
How do you express your anger?
How do you feel physically when you are angry?
What is the cause of your anger?

2. Understand you have a choice with anger.
You can either be angry or not be angry.
You can talk rationally about something that hurts you or you can explode irrationally.
These are all choices.

3. If you cannot talk rationally about the cause of your anger, use these "time-out" tools:
a)count to 10 slowly
b)focus on taking deep, slow breaths
c)move to another room or go for a long walk
d)meditate
e)think of something wonderful--a beautiful beach, blue skies
f)do something you enjoy--a game of tennis, read.

4. Check out our Parenting Help Page for Anger Management Tips for Parents

5. Find someone impartial with whom you can talk. This can be a good friend or a therapist,if you feel you need professional guidance.

6. Consult Self Help Sites that often provide valuable insights into your emotional issues. These are often a safe form of third person engagement. Most are free as well and provide question and answer forums that protect your anonymity. A good place to visit is SelpHelpCollective.com

7.Consult Professional Anger Management Resource for help and guidance.

8.Check out Anger Management Programs like Total Transformation. They provide professional consultation and help for Managing the Meltdown.

9. There are Nutrition and Lifestyle Changesthat can help you deal with anger as well.Professional advice can help you get quickly to the source of your emotional wounds. Often the source of these wounds is in childhood anger.

Persistence and patience will pay off eventually.

Avent, Milk & Me

I wanted to blog about this very long. The delay of this posting not because I am procrastinating; rather I forgot to check for the real price for Enfalac A+. Today I managed to see how much does it really cost. It costs for RM 42 for 1 tin consists of 400gm. One tin of this Enfalac A+ can make 60oz of milk and my daughter finished 20oz or more per day meaning she can finish one tin in 3 days and it will cost RM 420 per month.

I purchased Avent double pump during parenting fair and won 2nd prize for highest spender contest. All the prizes rough cost for RM 800 and I brought the pump at RM 1800.
It took 5 months to break-even without calculating the prize I won. –OR–

It took 3 months to break-even including the prize I won.

Whatever oz I am producing now and in the future is FREE (or priceless).  That make me SUPER HAPPY!

The great thing is I LOVE my Avent Double Pump.

The best is she still on breast milk and she is healthy.

The priceless thing I praise the Lord for giving me an ample of supply. AMEN!!!

How much milk can breast produce?

I am really amazed by the number of oz a mama can pumped – 100 oz per day. I read before about a mom pumped 96 oz per day but could not manage the get hold of the article anymore and now I have another chance to get hold of another page and I am not going to let go this page! LOL.

Just to share and have fun reading and hope you will be amazed and motivated to continue EP (exclusive pumping) or breastfeeding.

Medela Pumps Light Breasts On Fire, FDA Is Mad

Article from theStir

The snippets
"The FDA sent a warning letter to the president of Medela, Carr Lane Quackenbush, saying that an October 2010 visit to their facilities found them not in compliance with certain federal regulations, including but not limited to not taking proper action to correct and prevent issues with their Pump in Style Advanced pumps that are losing suction.
Ahem. Carr Lane Quakenbush. Real name. Serious face here. *deep breath*

Aside from those issues, there's also a problem they're not addressing with the pumps catching fire and hurting moms."

Super Cute

Super Cute!!!
This is the reason why I wish to have a twin.

My Lunch

Yesterday I cooked pumpkin oats for my lunch.  My colleagues expression were o.O then they said "yucks!!!" LOL.

There are 2 reasons I take oats. First, reduce my cholesterol. Second, it is use to replace white rice (to reduce carbo intake).

The extra benefit of taking oats, it can increase in milk supply.

Eat oats. Eat oatmeal, bake and eat oatmeal cookies--be creative. eat at least one cup of oats every day, split into two or more eating sessions. Drink plenty of water when you eat the oats. Oats are a galactogogue (something that increases breastmilk production) and are very healthy for your digestive tract as well.

The humble oat is one of our most nutritious foods, and contains proteins, vitamins, minerals and trace elements that nourish the nerves, support the metabolism of fats, and uplift the spirit. In traditional medicine, both the seed and the leaf—called oat-straw—are taken. Oats are prescribed as a nervine tonic in the treatment of nervous exhaustion. In Europe, women traditionally take oats after birth. Oats are taken today in the US to increase milk production, both as food and as a supplement. Like other galactagogues, oats are antidepressant, antispasmodic, and they increase perspiration.

Apart from this, pumpkin is nutritious.

Falling Asleep! OMG!..

I was so tired till I fall asleep on the wheel. I am freaking out when I am aware of that even though it is just 1 or 2 seconds and it might take my life away and my children as well.

I got to think of a way not to fall asleep again when I am driving, super scary and dangerous too especially I am driving with my children.

I got to brain-washed myself, not to fall asleep, NOT TO FALL ASLEEP, not to fall asleep, NOT TO FALL ASLEEP.

How I wish to become MILK dispenser?!

My colleague C was asking me today.

C : How much milk you manage to pump per day?

Me : About 50 oz to 60 oz per day

C : Last time you said in US selling how much?

Me : US milk bank sold for USD 3.20 per oz (really?! Yes... read more here)

C : (Wah, punching the calculator) You can make USD 160 per day and USD 4800 per month equivalent to RM 14,400 per month. You no need to work already, just pump your milk and sells.

Me : How I wish….

LOL!

Lactogenic Foods : Barley Water

Barley-water is used medicinally to treat colds, intestinal problems (both constipation and diarrhea) and liver disorders. It was recorded in Greek medicine two thousand years ago as a galactagogue. Taken for a week or two, it often helps mothers with chronic low milk supply. Make a pot in the morning and drink it throughout the day, warming each cup and sweetening it with a natural sweetener as desired.

Barley-water can be made with whole grain or pearl barley. Barley flakes can also be used, though these have been processed and are possibly less potent than the whole or pearled grain.

Preparation:
  • Quick-and-easy: 1/2 cup of flakes or pearled barley can be simmered in 1 quart of water for twenty minutes.
  • Long-and-intensive: 1 cup of whole or pearled barley is simmered in 3 quarts of water for up to 2 hours. About half the liquid should cook off. Some recipes call for only 1/2 hour cooking time. However, the longer the barley simmers and the more pinkish (and slimier) the water becomes, the more of the ‘cream’ will enter the water and the stronger the medicinal effect will be.
  • If the barley water becomes too thick to drink comfortably, add in more water.
  • When finished, remove from the stove and sieve off the water. The grain is now tasteless and can be thrown out.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of fennel powder or steep 2 – 3 teaspoons of fennel seeds for ten minutes in the barley-water before drinking.
  • The traditional recipe calls for fennel seed. I personally find that powdered fenugreek seed is tastier than fennel in barley-water.
Barley grass or barley water ~ This “green food” can help with increasing low milk supply as well as make the breast milk creamier and more nutrient rich. It can be taken in capsule form or the pearled barley (1 cup) can be simmered in a quart of water for about two hours. Three tsp of fennel seeds can be added…seep the mixture for 10 minutes before drinking.

Since both article said the same thing, it is worth to give a try.

Before I found this website/read this article. Myself been drinking barley water (just barley boiled with rock sugar), every alternate week, a big huge pot because it taste better than water.  I would not said I have a huge supply of milk but it maintain.

Malt

I remember a friend of mine told me malt is used to stop milk from flowing. I scared myself to death when I found out instant beverages that I am taking are contain malt. Eventually, I started to read the label on all the beverages / food I ate. Apparently malt used in everywhere especially instant beverages / food. I could not believe my eye when I read those label. So I decided to Google it.

“Lactogenic beverages include water, lactation teas , barley water, ginger ale and any imitation coffee containing chicory, dandelion or malt
"Lactogenic beverages include getting enough plain water to hydrate the body, drinking commercial lactation teas, non-alcoholic beer, ginger ale, Rivella, and natural herbal root-beers from your health food store. Check out coffee substitutes based on the lactogenic grain barley, such as CARO, Roma, Caffix, Pero or Dandy Blend. These imitation coffees usually also contain chicory or dandelion, plus malt—ingredients that are all lactogenic."
In the end, I realised I gave myself a big fright without nothing. I can continue my Horlick, Nestiva & Malta drink.

So relieve right now!

Latest Update on Jingle Jungle

I just finished the last piece of Box No.#3, eventually the last bag gone to the dustbin because it leaked.

Box No. # 1 : 2 leakage bags
Box No. # 2 : 8 leakage bags
Box No. # 3 : 6 leakage bags
Box No. # 4 : Un-open
Box No. # 5 (replacement from Fabulous Mom) : Un-open

What on earth am I still up on this wee hours?  I did not manage to bath last night, too tired and fall asleep with my kids when I accompanied them.  So, I get up; pumped milk, washed all bottles & bath.  Just before going to bed again, I want to blog about breast milk storage leakage problem in Box No.# 3.

Good night, everyone!

Glass/PES/PP/PC Milk Bottles???

Even wonder what make PP better than PC once upon a time.  What make PES better than PP this time round?

In my own opinion, sterilisation is the main culprit to all this chemical leach. If a plastic container/milk bottles do not expose to high temperature, the chemical will not leach.

Is it necessary to sterilize the milk bottles? Read more:-
Is PP milk bottles are really safe? Well, I guess no body will know it unless another curious mind (researcher) give us a detailed write-up about it.  Maybe few years down the road, PP/PES are not safe as well.

So, we as the parent, we do whatever we can to protect our little one. Sigh! Nothing in this world are safe anymore.  Educated yourself, equipped with more knowledgeable information regarding what you are using and how to deal with it rather than be a follower of everything.

JE's New Nanny.. Auntie P

Day 1
I was lingering around her house for about 3 hours before I leave.

Auntie P : You are worry, don't you?
Me : Yes, I am
Auntie P : Don't worry.  I will not abuse your daughter. (she repeated this for about 3 times)

When I went to picked JE, I was hoping & praying she will be fine. The moments she saw me, she gave me her cutest smile – a smile telling me she knew I will come back for her, a smile telling me she was happy to see me, a smile signing of relieve when I returned.  This smile indicate she is doing OK with Auntie P. Thanks, Lord!

Me : How much milk she take today?
Auntie P : 9oz.  She loves the pacifier a lot.
Me :  >.< (usually at home for a period of 9 hours, she can finished 15-18oz of milk)

Day 2
Me : How much milk she take today?
Auntie P : 9oz.  I cannot stand when she do not drink for 4 hours.  Breast milk very easily digested.  JE keeps on pushing the milk bottle with her tongue.  I feed her every 2-3 hours, even though she drink only 1-2oz - it is better than she does not drink at all.  I go to the extend to spoon feed her when she pushed out the teat with her tongue.
Me : (I am touched! At least she really put effort on feeding her)

JE smiles when she saw me, another indication she is doing fine today as well.

Day 3 (as today)
Me : How much milk she take today?
Auntie P : 9oz.  She did her first turn today. She did it only once.
Me : >.< (I am disappointed actually because I want her first turn to be with me because I want to witness it with my own eye)
Auntie P : I saw JE develops some rashes around the neck when I bathed her.  Since you said she has a very sensitive skin, I dare not simply put anything on her neck
Me : (I am glad, at least she did listen to what I said!)

Overall : Through my 3 days observation, Auntie P is at satisfactory level.

Jingle Jungle Breast Milk Storage Bag

I wrote about this storage bag leakeage @ part 1 & part 2.

Manufacturer : Fabulous Mom | I purchased from Enjoy Breastfeed

I was so mad when it leaked.  I posted the leakage photos at Fabulous Mom @ Facebook and send a private message to Vivian Foo at her facebook, the founder of Fabulous Mom.  Instantly, I got replied from Vivian.  She asked me to send more pictures of this leakage to her business email address.  She added she sold 8000 boxes of this storage bags and so far this is the first complaint she had. (At my ex-nanny place, another mother also breastfeed her baby and she also using Jingle Jungle Storage Bag.  I asked my ex-nanny, does this bag got leakage.  She told got because when she thaw the bag in a mug of water, the water sometime will turn cloudy.  I guess not much people will put in effort to write a complaint letter/email.  As for me, this bags really get into my nerve and make me so frustrated specially Box No.2 got 8 leakages bag)

When it leaks again (part 2), I snapped so much pictures for her to investigate and my gut feeling told me not to dispose the leakage bag just yet.  I sent those pictures to her and she requested to collect the leakage bags from me.  Their courier came and pickup on the same day I sent her the pictures.

I even wrote an email to Enjoy Breastfeed to ask for products exchange since I have not open the Box No 3 & 4 at that particular time.  Michelle from Enjoy Breastfeed claimed that she used up 3 boxes and no leakage at all and she need to ask Fabulous Mom before can do the exchange.  So far, no new from Michelle.

When I did the complaint to Fabulous Mom, I never ask for refund/replacement, then one day, I got an email from Fabulous Mom asking me whether I want a refund or a replacement.  I gave a deep thought and in the end I am asking for a replacement rather a refund.  Maybe this is because I want to know the new replacement they going to send to me could have leakage problem.  If there are any more leakages, I will keep on snap pictures and email to Vivian, not because I want a replacement but I want to see improve done on this storage bags.  This storage bags are use to keep breast milk and they suppose to be reliable and I am expecting no leakage at all and should have more quality control over this bag.  You are unable to purchase breast milk in Malaysia, regardless how wealthy you are.  Even in the State, breast milk is selling at USD 3.20 per oz.  There, now you know how precious is breast milk and some even name it as gold liquid.

The Result….

Yesterday was the last session with the psychologist.  Last session was all about the results of the finding that I was waiting for.

The results from the questionnaire as from parent point of view, he is normal and within the range.

The results from the questionnaire as from his class teacher point of view, he is having problem at school.

According to the results, his temperament depends heavily on his moods.

According to the results, my stress level as a parent is within the normal range.

Basically he is normal, just slight delay in this social skills & emotional. These 2 delays are our fault as parent.

As for social skill this is because we are pretty much on our own (meaning we are seldom social with others, Saturday & Sunday are more like family days meaning only the 4 of us without any strangers/circle of friends to go through it). Children learn everything from the parent through observation, his comfort zone is when he is at home with us but when at school he is force to interact with strangers, force to work with other kids, force to adapt to the new environment. Apparently he does not adapt very well in school.

Suggestion from the psychologist : bring him to the park / cousin house when he will learn to interact with others / learn to adapt to new environment within his comfort zone. Always prepare him what to expect, what will happen, how to react when things happen.

As for emotional delay, we as parent only focus on learning skill. We make sure he is well equipped with knowledge and we ignore this little thing called emotional. We never teach him how to express himself, maybe we take thing for granted or maybe we thought he will learn someday or maybe we are just not sensitive enough on this emotional development. Apparently, it is important to his growth. If he does not how to express himself, he gets frustrated easily because his needs is not fulfil and this will contribute to his bad mood and this will lead to his misbehave.

Suggestion from the psychologist : breakdown the emotional to the smaller pieces such as would you feel happy when all your friends play with other and not you? As a parent, should show intimacy to the children – hugging, touching – sense of closeness, safe & belonging.

I learn a lot from this psychologist and I like the way she explained things. Sometime we thought it is a small little things but it is a matter when come to children.

She gave this example and we are guilty as charge: Why children do not have eye contact with talking? When you talk to a baby, you will go close (basically in front of the baby) and talk, but when the baby become toddler specially when he knows how to walks/runs, we as the parent do not talk to them with eye contact. (for eg: you ask a child to do something when you are doing dishes/cooking – no eye contact, when you speak to a child – do you go down to his level and speak or you just speak at your level)

She did ask whether my expectation towards JC & his class teacher towards JC are the same. For me, he is only four and I do not like when his class teacher compare him with other 23 kids. He may not be vocal smooth but he is good at other skills. He will everything learn at his own pace. But apparently his class teacher has a different point of view, she expects him to have a longer attention span, she expects him to sit still, she expects him to do what is asked for….. she expects a lot of things from JC.

The psychologist did mention JC is only four and children at age four have a very limit attention span.

She suggests we talk to the class teacher and get the mutual expectation and how to help JC at school otherwise his learning & growth is limited as too much expectation & pressure on him – which will not do him any good.

I am glad God answered my prayer. At least now I knew the problem is not lie on JC but on hubby & me. We are the parent should guide him the way it should be, we should be more sensitive to his needs. We already moulded him to what he had become and hopefully when this assessment, hubby & I can do better to mould him to a better person but first thing first both of us need to change in our social & emotional skills before we can help JC.

I pray for strength, hope, faith, patient & guidance from God.

We will do better together, JC. We will!

Hand-Free Pumping Bra

I want a hand-free pumping bra so much but I could not get it in Malaysia. So, I decided to make one.

My first attempt to imitate Easy Expression. I did make one and it seems to be successful but my Avent double pumps are heavy, therefore it could not hold it properly in place. (see my sewing skill sucks! hehehehe).  It was a fail attempt!

Then, I tried another one using my old bra by just cutting 2 holes.  This one it manages to hold the pumps in place and I can move around but the sponge tends to leave some residue at my pump. I am worried the sponge residue will get into the milk. So 2nd attempt fail again!

Then 3rd attempt, when I saw Pump-Ease pumping bra, looking up & down, high & low for a distributor in Malaysia but failed.  This tube I convert it to hand-free pumping bra.  It can holds the pumps very well and it is tight, unfortunately it press too tight resulting in block ducts.  I need to put extra efforts & time to massage the blocked ducts to clear them.  So, failed again!

I could not stand it anymore, I told myself, I did tried 3 attempts.  So, finally I decided to placed an order at Pump-Ease as they shipped to all countries, moreover in month of February 2011 is a promotion month, buy 1 get 1 free.  So, I grabbed this opportunity.  Then I waited & waited & waited and starting to think my neck was as long as giraffe.  Then it finally arrived in Malaysia.  I was so happy when I get hold of it.  I even tell my hubby, hold your breath, we are going to smell the air of Canada.  LOL!

I ordered "Very Cherry" & Tuxedo patterns.  I likes the "Very Cherry" pattern the most as it is so colorful.  Anyway, the smallest size is slightly bigger for me, so I used a pair of safety pin to adjust it to my size.  Apparently it works.

Why I wanted a pump-bra so much?  This can help me pump more often at work as I can multi-task.  I still can do my work while pumping milk and it does not affect my working hours.  The wonderful things are I can complete 2 jobs at one time. Actually 3 things including talking to my colleague, discuss about projects and etc.

While at home, I can pump milk and feed JE and sometime even change her.

Nice product, Wendy! Thank you.
