World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1 -7) : Myth vs Fact

While reading my Sunday newspaper, "The Star" dated 26 July 2009. I came across an interesting article which I cannot wait to put it up in my blog. :)

MYTH : "Malnourished mothers cannot breastfeed."

FACT : They can. Moderate maternal malnutrition has little or no effect on milk production. In fact, the mother will continue to produce milk, at the own expense of her own body stores. Extra food and fluids are needed to replenish the mother's own reserves, and micronutrient supplementation may be needed.

ME : New to me ^_^. One thing I knew, if eat too much bitter gourd while breastfeeding will make your milk taste bitter and your baby will refuse to drink. So, do not over-doing - BALANCE.

MYTH : "Stress prevents mothers from producing milk."

FACT : Stress does not prevent production of milk, but may temporarily interfere with its flow. Breastfeeding mothers have lower stress hormone levels than non-breastfeeding mothers.

ME : No wonder I was happy all the times during my breastfeeding period. Cannot imagine, how come it can be so powerful. LOL.

MYTH : "Once a mother stops breastfeeding, she can't restart."

FACT : A mother can restart breastfeeding - there is no time limit. In some contexts, grandmothers have breastfed their grandchildren.

ME : I found this very very interesting. hehe... thinking of giving it a try.

MYTH :"HIV positive mothers should never breastfeed."

FACT : Exclusive breastfeeding for six months is the safest option and gives the best chance of HIV-free child survival, unless total replacement feeding is acceptable, feasible, affordable, sustainable and safe (AFASS) - unlikely in emergencies. After six months, if replacement feeding is still not AFASS, continued breastfeeding with adequate complementary foods is the safest option.

ME : New to me. ^_^ And happy to learn something new.

My Latest Addiction

Ghost Whisperer. I really really loves this TV series. In fact I love it very much. I can stared at TV and pray hard no one will disturb my favourite show. LOL. That is me... sort of taken. :p

In fact this series not only about trouble ghost, what I treasure the most is the unconditional love, trust, faith, hope & friendship in this series.

How Jim loves Melinda unconditionally and trust her 100% and without a doubt. It also talks about the bonds of friendship that she build and treasure.

How others view her as nut job cases but she is so determined in what she believe and continue to help others.

Overall, it is amazing and I really love it.

Another Lesson in My Life

When disappointment wreck on you, your whole world at that moment seems like crushed on you. What more you can expect? Regardless you like it or not, you still need to force them down your throat.

Time I would say is the best medicine.

We cannot change someone attitude or behavior, the only thing we can do is lower down our expectation towards them OR expect nothing from them OR just leave them.

Most of the time, it is so hard to let go and the more you hang on - you will only get worstly hurt.

If its meant to happen - it will happen (that is what I believe) regardless how much we blame ourself and become grumphy about it. Let said "NO USE AT ALL".

It is seem like I always learnt my lesson the hard way where all those hurt engrave itself on me and hang on to me as long as I let them. Sound stupid? OR does it sound alike?

Well, I guess I am reaching a point where I should let go and stop blaming myself as I could not control / decide the outcome like.

There are many things in this world (or in my scope of life) still need my attention. So, do not put all eggs in one basket. Spread them. Spread the attention. Spread the focus.

IT IS TIME TO LEARN HOW TO LET GO........

Bento Mania

I found a mommy is a bento mania. I am very surprise that she can manage to create something so nice which I would guess no children can resist such a nice food. Her creation not only edible, it is good for display set as well. Wish to learn more from her, visit her @ Hijack Queen.

When I read her blog, it is like she is talking to me personally ~ feeling very warm. :p

This picture taken from her website (I hope she do not mind).

I love them. Thinking of trying something like this to smooth my fussy-eater son. LOL. Not sure what is the outcome as I am not born creative. :p

Blocked Duct or Mastitis

A friend of mine was asking me about breastfeeding. Saying that the milk only come through one little hole and even fully engorge - no milk is leaking. Even stand under hot shower, no milk is leaking either.

At first, I thought maybe the breast pump and then mastitis came into my mind but her breast is not red or painful as the baby still can sucks and her pain is because of the engorgement.

Feeling curious, I web-searched about it and to my surprise it is mastitis and I learned something new again. I am glad.

I found this article from About.com

Mastitis

Mastitis is a bacterial infection of the breast that usually occurs in breastfeeding mothers. However, it can occur even in women who are not breastfeeding or pregnant, and can occur even in small babies, of either sex. Nobody knows exactly why some women get mastitis and others do not. Bacteria may gain access to the breast through a crack or sore in the nipple, but women without sore nipples also get mastitis, and most women with cracks in the nipple do not.

Mastitis needs to be differentiated from a plugged or blocked duct, because the plugged or blocked duct does not need treatment with antibiotics, whereas mastitis often, but not always, does require treatment with antibiotics. A blocked duct presents as a painful, swollen, firm mass in the breast. The skin overlying the blocked duct is often quite red, similar to what happens during mastitis, but less intense. Mastitis is usually also associated with fever and more intense pain as well. However, it is not always easy to distinguish between a mild mastitis and a severe blocked duct. A blocked duct, can, apparently, go on to become mastitis. In France, physicians also recognize something they call lymphangite that is fever associated with skin which is hot and red, but there is no underlying painful mass. They do not believe this requires treatment with antibiotics. I have seen a few cases that fit this description in my practice, and indeed, the problem resolves without antibiotics. But then, often so does full blown mastitis.

As with almost all breastfeeding problems, a poor latch, and thus, poor draining of the breast sets up the situation where mastitis is more likely to occur.

Blocked Ducts

Blocked ducts will almost always resolve spontaneously within 24 to 48 hours after onset, even without any treatment at all. During the time the block is present, the baby may be fussy when nursing on that side, as milk flow may be slower than usual. Blocked ducts can be made to resolve more quickly by:

  • Continuing breastfeeding on the affected side.
  • Draining the affected area better. One way of doing this is to position the baby so his chin "points" to the area of hardness. Thus if the blocked duct is in the outside, lower area of your breast (about 4 o'clock), the football hold would be best.
  • Using breast compression while the baby is feeding, getting your hand around the blocked duct and using steady pressure.
  • Applying heat to the affected area (with a heating pad or hot water bottle, but be careful not to injure your skin by using too much heat for too long a period of time).
  • Trying to rest. (Not always easy, but take the baby to bed with you.)

If the blocked duct is associated with a small blister on the end of the nipple, you can open it with a sterile needle. Flame a sewing needle, let it cool off, and puncture the blister. No need to dig around. Just break the blister. Sometimes you can squeeze out a little toothpaste like material from the duct and the duct will immediately unblock. Or, put the baby to the breast and he may unblock it for you. Opening the blister has the added benefit of decreasing nipple pain, even if the blocked duct does not immediately resolve. Come to the clinic if you cannot do it yourself.

If a blocked duct has not settled within 48 hours (unusual), therapeutic ultrasound often works. This can be arranged at a neighbourhood physiotherapy office or sports medicine clinic. Many ultrasound therapists are not aware of this use for ultrasound.

Usage of Garbage Enzyme

Garbage enzyme has many uses for the environment, agriculture and even in homes.

In agriculture, garbage enzyme is used:
  • to reduce the usage of chemical fertilizers
  • to keep the farm free from insects and infections
  • as a soil fertilizer for vegetable growing
  • as a natural pesticide and herbicide [Tried and it works well. More flowers on the plant :P]
  • to convert sandy land to fertile farm land
  • keep the air cool and clean in the farm atmosphere
  • clean the dirty and impure water in the farm

In homes, garbage enzyme is used:

  • as a household cleaning liquid
  • to remove foul odours, molds and grime in the kitchen and toilet
  • as an anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent
  • to drive away insects [Tried. No insects near / in dustbin. About 15 bottles of Garbage Enzyme next to it :)]
  • to clean carpets and remove ticks
  • for laundry washing and ironing
  • for mopping floors [Tried. The floor shines. It felt better when step-on]
  • for cleaning cars

How Rich Are We ??

One day a father and his rich family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose to show him how poor people can be. They spent a day and a night on the farm of a very poor family. When they got back from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "Very good Dad!" "Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked. "Yeah!" "And what did you learn?"

The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden; they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the garden; they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard; they have a whole horizon." When the little boy was finished, his father was speechless. His son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how 'poor' we are!"

Isn't it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor and a positive attitude towards life -- you've got everything! You can't buy any of these things. You may have all the material possessions you can imagine, provisions for the future, etc.; but if you are poor of spirit, you have nothing!
