JC & Psychologist

1st Session with Psychologist
  • Meet with us (the family)
  • She asked questions, we answered.
  • Questions like :-
    • What are you here?
    • How you want me to help your son?
    • What do you think it is his problem?
    • When is his first word?
    • When is his first turn?
    • When is his first step?
    • How do you discipline him?
    • When he picked up something from the floor, what do you do?
    • When does this behaviour start of pickup things from the floor to eat started?
    • How is he relationship with his baby sister?
    • Does he respond to her?
    • How you guys? Do have time to spend together? Do you have your own time?
  • Nearly end of the session, she said just an preliminary observation
    • I can see that he is an attention seeker because he will keep on calling your name (mommy) till you responded to him.
  • We were given 2 set of booklet to answer. Another 2 set of booklet for the class teacher and the day care provider.
2nd Session with Psychologist
  • Meet with the patient (my son)
  • Doing child therapy – 50 minutes.
  • I was surprised he willing to follow the psychologist into the child therapy room without any fuss but he checked on me occasionally. I keep on reminded him that I will be here waiting for you. Do not worry as mommy is not going anywhere.
  • He was given a few pieces of paper to draw on. The child therapy room is full of toys – dinosaurs, cars, trucks, toy houses, sand, baby stroller and etc.
  • Once they are done, they came out from the room and we suppose to go to psychologist room for further discussion, then JC made a big fuss because he enjoyed so much being in that child therapy room as many toys are new to him. He kept on repeating himself by saying “I want doctor, I want doctor”
  • The psychologist told me the followings:-
    • When the connection is not established, JC does not even bother to talk to her or follow any of her instruction, but once they were connected it is easier for her to communicate with him.
    • JC is the same person need soft approach with a lot of positive approach meaning I cannot say NO, CANNOT, NOT ALLOW as this consider negative approach.
    • When I asked what do you mean soft + positive approach, she explained, when we are in the child therapy room, he was playing with the doll houses, he took all the toys include the furniture down and then he will jumped to another toy without cleaning up the doll houses. So what I did, JC can you put back the doll inside the house? He is not responding as he is busy with his new toy. Then she added, let’s do it together. Then she took the initiative to put the 1st doll inside the house, and then she asked where this doll goes to. JC puts them all back all by himself. Once he is done, she said “great job, give me five”. This is considering soft + positive approach.
    • I told her I did the same thing but sometime he just gets into my nerves. She added being a parent is not easy and you need tons of patients. (Got slap by her words).
    • She asked “Do you read any parent book to help you to understand JC better such as at this age what are the things to expect and his development progress?” I told her I did subscribe from the internet specially babycenter as they will send a weekly newsletter in the child development. She added, it would be good if you can get some professional books on this and read it up (another slap on my face)
    • You need to let the class teacher know about the soft + positive approach and one you are connected with him, he is easy to handle. Maybe do not place him in large class, you could try to find a kindergarten /pre-school with only 10-12 per class.
    • She is suggesting bringing JC for speech assessment.
We need to schedule for another appointment (3rd appointment) to reveal the results after she looks through all the booklets.

In the end of the session, I feel so guilty and such a fail parent.

JE's Nanny #1 Day 1

Today is JE first day at nanny place. I was there for 3 hours before leaving for doctor appointment. I found out the following:-
  • Nanny is down with only one maid (2 runaways)
  • She is currently taken care 6 babies and another 2 more coming within the next 2 months.
  • Using other babies teat to test on a new baby
  • TV is on and the maid was watching it while feeding babies.
  • When JE inside the swing, the eldest toddler sleep under the swing and use her legs to kick JE from the bottom. When I voiced, only the care taker take action.
  • The eldest toddler pokes JE eye.
  • Two fans was on the highest speed.  Some babies belly buttons were exposed.

When I went back to fetch her home @ 5.30pm, I noticed she got bitten mark on the right wrist.
  • JE bathing time is 4.30pm – I think it is too late to have a first bath.
  • She only taken 6oz of milk from 9 am till 5.30pm. Poor thing, usually she will be taken about 12-15oz
  • She got bitten mark. The eldest toddler bites her. I was wondering where are the care taker when this taken place.
  • She did not smile at me at all regardless how I tried to make her smile.  She just stared at me, really stared!  Hubby said the same, regardless how he tried to make her smile, she just stared at you.

I am seriously thinking she is not capable in handling so many babies at one time, moreover 2 maids’ runaways.  Even though the ratio suppose to be 1:3 (one minder with 3 babies) by law but I do not think they can handle.  Moreover, the current maid is very rough to the babies and look moody as well.

JE is only 5 months old and she is at the same place most of the time as she does not know how to crawl / sit-up / walking, so the bitten mark is totally not acceptable.

I will withdraw JE from this nanny.  Hubby & I feel so guilty right now!

The More The Merrier.... yeah!

Going crazy again! Purchase another 11 sets of milk bottles for storage.  It consists of 11 of 5oz and 22 of 8oz.  Total of 33 milk bottles; non-BPA-free.

It make no different by choosing BPA-free or non-BPA-free.  Some research saying that BPA-free products are even worst then non-BPA-free products.  Read here.

Small Cup but Great Features...

These small little cups have great features.  They belong to JC and I admired its feature and it is great product from Korea but it is not suitable as breast milk storage because it is dye.

Take a closer look.

It is freezer, microwave, dish-washer safe.  Even is food-grade plastic.

BPA-Free as it made from polypropylene.

It even tell you how many oz it can fit.

Recycle My Breast Milk

I am down with sore throat & cough for the past 10 days. My condition do not seems to be improving. I might pay a visit to the GP for some medicine but then which mean I need to pump-n-dump my milk. I am very reluctant to do it. So, if I really go to see a GP then most likely I recycle my milk (after pump I drink it myself).

I pumped 16.5oz this morning, still thinking should I drink it or give it to JE or JC.

Yesterday night, I heard JC been coughing with phlegm, instead of giving him cow milk, I gave him breast milk. In the morning, I did not hear him coughing. Yeah!!! At first, I was worried he could cough even more because I am not so well myself but apparently the breast milk works on him pretty well.

Child Care Centre / Private Baby Sitter?!

I have been searching high & low for a centre / nanny to take care JE. I actually prefer centre compare to private nanny, reason due to more breastfeeding friendly, I can ensure they are always be at one place, more kids to play / fight with & more systematic (as they will not go on sick leave / holiday leave / unexpected leave).

Nevertheless, choosing a centre can be a headache as well if you can find one. Here in Malaysia, infant child care centre are limited and if talking about professional centre can consider nil.

Recently, I found a centre; owned & operated by a chemist who just back from UK. She is a perfectionist and a mother of 2 boys – breastfed her boys till 16 months.

All her care-takers are nurses and her centre can cater for 27 babies with 9 care-takers with a ratio of 1:3. They use cloth napkin for babies under 6 months and disposable diaper for babies above 6 months. The monthly fee you are paying include babies organic toiletries except body foam & body shampoo, lavender essential oil for aromatherapy used to help babies to settle, olive oil for baby massage, organic meals, twice bathing per day, flash card programme.

Since all care-takers are nurses, they know how to handle breast milk. I even asked a stupid question just to double check on their breast milk management, such as “you defrost the milk using microwave?”. Immediately, the nurse told me NO, never ever put breast milk in microwave. Then, I asked again “WHY?”. She answered because all nutrients will be gone then she added, the microwave for the usage of the staffs in this centre. Well, I am just checking.

This centre consider perfect but I find that all the care-takers are emotionless. None of them got any expression on their face. They are neither happy nor sad, just expressionless. This is my biggest concern. “Do they have passion in taking care children/babies?” “Do they just treat it just another job?” As an infant care-taker, you must have extreme patient and passion as it is an exhaust job & heavy responsibility.

Anyway, this centre located pretty far from my house but quite near to my working place. The travelling time with jam will be 1 to 1.5 hours. If I am sick, I do not think I can travel that far to put JE and come back to rest. Another dilemma.

Today, I interviewed 2 private baby sitters. Both are mothers and they are knowledgeable in breast milk handling.

During an hour of chit-chatting, I preferred Nanny A compare to Nanny B. Then I received a call from my ex-nanny saying that she have a place for JE. Now I am consider ex-nanny or Nanny A.

I HATE YOU, MIL

I always keep a distance from you. I never live together with you before and I only see you once every year and yet....

  • You called your only grandson USELESS.
  • As a nearly 60 year old grandmother, you fight food with JC who is only 3.5 years old. You never left the last piece for him. All you said, the chicken so nice and munched them away. When JC cried for the chicken, you take it out from your mouth..... erwwww... yucks...
  • On every other day, you kept on asking “He can finish that fish by himself?”
  • You offered to help to feed JC. You basically stuffed everything into his mouth. When I told you nicely, wait till his swallow his food then only feed another spoon. You BANG the bowl on the table.
  • Your strength is tremendous; you made a lot of bruises on JC's arms & legs. You even made some on my arms.
  • You look through my personal belonging when I was asleep.
  • You look through our medical bills without asking.
  • You portrait my hubby discussed everything with you which he never.
  • You portrait to my colleagues (when they visited me during my confinement) that I am having cold-war with you, which I never did.
  • You made me accountability for the things I never did. Eg: I do not have the power to determine someone fate nor I am GOD and when one of your relative passed away because of cancer and you said it is because of me. Fascinating right!
  • You blamed me for the things I never did.
  • You always said inappropriate things at inappropriate time such as "your daughter will be hospitalised for 7 days because she lacked of fire elements in her DOB". God blesses JE as she discharged on the 5th day.
  • You brought a broom and you swept inside out and swept everything towards the main door. I wonder where have you placed your culture. It is a taboo for Chinese using a broom to sweep from inside out. The right way of sweeping is sweep from main door into the house.
  • You neither know how to cook nor stay-at-home mom, I wonder what is the point for my hubby asking you to come down for my confinement.  Doctor ordered me to bed-rest since I was having pre-term labour & eventually I still need to take care of you. I cooked lunch & dinner for you every night till JE was born.  Long story short version, instead of you take care of me BUT it is the other way round.
  • During my confinement :-
    • I heard you told my hubby – “she asleep from 4pm till now (about 7.30pm) & still not yet wake up”.
    • You open up all windows when it was windy day till all curtains flied 90 degree & you switched on the fan to the highest speed.
  • You never respect our religion, you bring along all your ritual things into our house. When I sense some spirits in the house, I voiced my concern, you basically ignore us.
    • I basically pumping around the clock especially when JE still in hospital for her jaundice. Every time, when I was my pumps, I can sense someone was standing behind me and watched over me. When I turned and take a look, no one was there except me. Creepy! These happen every time I wash my pumps at wee hours like 12 mid-night, 3am, and 6am. Super scary!
  • When we asked you to leave politely, you DEMAND for money and in cash. I really do not know what kind of mother are you?  What you demand it is higher than a qualified confinement lady, you only throw rubbish, cut red dates & wash the plates.
  • During your stay with us, you always portrait yourself is the best and everyone else around you are BAD/being brainwash by others.
When I wrote about this, my blood still boiling. I really cannot stand this kind of people (2-heads snake).

Respect is earned. They are not given to you regardless how old are you. If you want people to respect you, you yourself MUST learn to respect others.

MIL, you are selfish, ignorant, queen of gossip, un-corporative, never listen, un-willing to learn, impatient, behaviour & attitude problem.

MIL, I do not respect you anymore.

M.O.N.K.E.Y.?!

In an organisation consists of many levels of people, top management, middle management, lower management and bee worker.

An organisation neither survives with only bee workers nor only managers.

I always believe employees are asset for an organisation. They are the one make the company moving forward. Management planned & forecast while bee worker work towards those planned & forecast. Both are working hand-in-hand to achieve the goal.

Some employees feel appreciate and willing to go extra miles for a company and some do not. An organisation should rewards accordingly and does not blind by sweet talker that only how to talk but never get the job done.

Please bear in mind that, if a bee worker can think like you (management) – they will be sitting at your place.

Some people wants balance in life, working it is just part of essential routine to get the bills paid. Not everyone as ambitious as the management, who can neglect family & friends just to climb the corporate leader.

So before you make any stupid conclusion about your bee workers / complaining about their common sense / complaining about their work ability / questioning about their loyalty towards the company, please reflect it to yourself – have you be a good boss / have you guide them properly / have your instruction given clearly / do you respect them? / do you treat them as a human being?

You may say “You must be a bee worker”. Nope, I am in middle management and I am not in level only command my staffs around. I am at the level where I oversee my own department, make sure everything run smoothly in the office and get my hand dirty in all sort of projects.

Over the years, I gained a lot experience, loss a few good staff due to economic / cost-cutting exercises, earned their respects and consistently proof to them & myself. I came across all kinds of human being.
  • Some in category of over step the boundaries.
  • Some in category of demand a high salary but do not want to go extra miles.
  • Some in category of win-win situation.
  • Some in category of war partner.
Despite how capable I am; how well I handle my staffs; how well knowledgeable I am in my line of industry; how much effort I put in – to my ex-boss, I still a MONKEY. How ironic?

New Storage Method

Latest storage method for my breast milk to save space in order to put more breast milk.  Among all storages I had milk bottles, ice cubes & storage bag.  I still prefer milk bottles because it is the easier and no leakage at all.

I had purchased 4 boxes of this storage bags and not satisfied with it because it got leakage problem.

The first box - only have 2 bags got leakage problem.  I throw it away without taking about photo.
The second box - have 5 bags got leakage problem of 14 bags.  Super mad.

I still have 3rd & 4th boxes to go.  If it leaks again, I will snap & snap & snap more pictures.

Leak Again?!

I am so done with this brand.  I wonder do they have quality control over the product before placing it in the market.

I brought 4 boxes of this Jingle Jungle Breastmilk Storage Bags and each box consists of 25 bags.

1st box : 2 bags having leakage problem.
2nd box : 5 bags having leakage problem.  In the above photo are the 5th bags.  Sigh.  I still have 11 bags to go.

I am not sure what is the quality like for the 3rd & the 4th box.

I am so mad right now. Argggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..................

I brought a new sets of marker pen for him. Then when he saw this colorful little cups, he wants it.  I guess in his school have this little colorful cups.  When we reached home, he asked his daddy "where is the yellow pen?" because the yellow cup is empty.  Maybe next round, will buy him a yellow marker pen.

Lactation Cookies Recipe

Hanging out at http://theleakyboob.com/ a lot lately.  Found this lactation cookies very interesting, have not try myself - will do soon once I get hold of the ingredients.

Recipe contributed by Krista, photograph by Kari.

1 cup butter (softened)
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flaxseed meal
4 tablespoons of water
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons brewer’s yeast
3 cup rolled oats
1 cup chocolate chips

Soak the flaxseed in the water for a few minutes to soften.
Mix dry ingrediants.
Cream together butter and sugar, add eggs, flaxseed and vanilla.
Add to dry ingredients.

Drop on cookie sheet .
Bake 8 – 12 minutes on 375º.
Enjoy.

A note from Krista : Just a quick note: I altered this recipe a bit to give it less sugar and more punch. I took out 1/4 c of both types of sugar for a 1/2 c decrease in sugar. I also doubled both the flax and the brewer's yeast. They didn't taste any different as far as I could tell.

Is your child gifted?

I read an article @ babycenter on children behavior problems.  I found it quiet true.  Here is the snippet of it:-

"Can behavior problems be a sign of giftedness?
Very bright children are often unusually strong willed, negotiate like lawyers, use sarcasm to make a point, refuse to suffer fools, or are overly critical. Sometimes, gifted children are disruptive in classrooms because they refuse to do exercises they consider to be busywork. Of course, all of this can be true of any kid, it's just more so for gifted children. Misbehavior in the classroom can sometimes indicate that grade-skipping could be in order. "
Somehow, I can relate them to JC as he is really strong-will child, constantly test my patient, constantly negotiating, constantly want attention and worst still when he wants your attention, there goes my living room - messy and it seems like been visit by twin tornado.

Pink Eye & Breast Milk

JC got pink eye on 18-Feb-2010.  His eyes was swallon, teary & the white area become red.  Breast milk was dropped into his eye on 19-Feb-2010 midnight.

After 4 days, his eye was back to original and pink eye is gone.  Breast milk rocks!!!

Cross my finger, give a silent prayer...

I had started JC on these routine yesterday:-
  • Diet-High protein, few processed carbs
    • Eggs | lean meat | white meat & poultry | fish | soy | beans | milk | cheese | yogurt
    • Cereals | fruits & vegetables.
  • Sleeping time sharp at 8.30pm.  By the time he really sleeping will be 10pm and I am hoping he can get at least 10 hours sleep.
  • I even give him fish oil so that he can get enough of Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Reduce his intake of sweet, chocolate, soft-drink and even fast food.
I cross my finger and said a silent prayer, hoping this will increase the attention span in class.

All About Carbohydrates...

There are 2 types of carbohydrates - Complex Carbohydrate & Simpe Carbohydrate.  I guess JC's teacher trying to tell me about simple carbs.  These are what I have found out :-

Complex carbohydrates foods are basically those in wholegrain form such as wholegrain breads, oats, muesli and brown rice. Complex carbs are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple carbohydrates and thus provide a gradual steady stream of energy throughout the day.

The best way to provide the diet with complex carbohydrates is to consume foods in their most natural state such as oatmeal, bran and brown rice.
  • Bran
  • Wheatgerm
  • Barley
  • Maize
  • Buckwheat
  • Cornmeal
  • Oatmeal
The food list below shows good sources of complex carbohydrates.
  • Pasta
  • Macaroni
  • Spaghetti
  • Brown rice
  • Potatoes
  • Other root vegetables
  • Wholemeal breads
  • Granary bread
  • Brown bread
  • Pitta bread
  • Bagel
  • Wholegrain cereals
  • High fiber breakfast cereals
  • Porridge oats
  • All bran
  • Wheetabix
  • Shredded wheat
  • Ryvita crispbread
  • Muesli
  • Cassava
  • Corn
  • Yam
  • Oatcakes
  • Peas
  • Beans
  • Lentils
Simple carbohydrates are usually considered to be "bad" carbs, but these are those that have been processed and broken down before being put back together again in an unnatural way such as to produce a sweet product like chocolate.

Simple carbohydrates release the glucose faster into blood stream resulting "too much energy" in a child.

Psychologist vs Psychiatrist

Anyway, I been researching about the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?  The short answer is, psychiatrists are medical doctors and psychologists are not. The suffix "-iatry" means "medical treatment," and "-logy" means "science" or "theory." So psychiatry is the medical treatment of the psyche, and psychology is the science of the psyche.

According to Malaysian Psychiatric Association, we have both in Malaysia.

I am also surprised that HELP University College has a Centre For Psychological And Counseling Services and it is open to external clients (individuals, children, couples and families) who wish to seek counseling.

I called up to check and these are what I had found out from them:-
1st session : Meet the parents
2nd session: Meet the patient
3rd session: Assessment report

But I have yet decide to proceed.

Every Child is Unique.

When JC was 3 years old, his class teacher was concern as he still baby talks a lot. They did not understand what he was talking half the times! His teacher brought this matter up to me which I already consulted his paediatric way before teacher voiced anything. According to paediatric, JC was normal. Therefore, I told the teacher - he may be weak at his vocal but his other abilities are strong such as identified colours, shape, blocks & puzzle.

Later down the road, his class teacher told me he was the first child can drew a fish & a smiley face all by himself (even though the line was not perfect round/straight but you can easily identify it was a fish & a smiley face.)

Then he surprised his class teacher as he knew what is day & night and he can related both of them by singing :

Every day under the SUN,
Every night under the STAR,
Night & day,
I sleep & play.
He even sing twinkle twinkle little star for the night.

Now, he is in 4 years old class. His class teacher (different from his 3 years old teacher) insists me to bring him to do a psychology assessment. She compares JC with her other 23 students by saying "Your son is the only one who cannot talk properly and you should not giving him cheese as cheese contains a lot of carbohydrate that make him hyper-functioning." Then I was like o_O (in my heart was like "Are you sure?" - I told myself I will Google for information about this little thing called carbohydrate).

She does not even let him go to toilet if he did not ask properly. Another o_O. Her expectation is that, you must ask properly before she allowed you go to toilet and those words are "Teacher, may I go to toilet, please?"

My son put it this way :-
JC : Teacher, shee shee?
Teacher : I do not understand what are you talking. Talk properly
JC : Teacher,.... may.... I..............(stuck somewhere).... shee shee
Teacher : What is shee shee? It is toilet.
JC : Toilet
Teacher : Where is the magic word?
JC : Please.

Teacher also said he is very good in his colouring, he manages to colour a picture with multiple colours and once he is done, he will flip the paper and started to draw and colour them and tells teacher about his drawing.

She also added, my son totally not interested in Mandarin class. He would wonder off. Beside than that, she also claims that my son cannot take simple instruction unless she is very firm.

As a mommy, I think my son is fine.  He maybe slow at his vocal but his ability to think, his observation, his logical thinking and his analytical amazed me.

I believe God created every child to be unique.  Everything else, it is just a guideline.

I have downloaded a free pattern from Handmade-Adelaide-Baby on how to make my very own baby pouch.

I was so happy when it was done because I am not good at sewing (even now), but I managed to do it.

Fresh out from dryer.

Testing the baby pouch on JE. She loves it very much.
When we were out and when she was fussy, placed her in this pouch. It can calm her down and she can finished her milk without much persuasive.
The power of babywear. Yeah!!!!

Breast Milk Storage Method

Way before I purchased the freezer, I was keep on thinking way to maximize my freezer to keep more breast milks. Then I came across on article about making breast milk as ice cube and store it in zip lock bag.

I am very particular about frozen breast milk, how to store it, is it safe, is it correct & etc.... Then later, when I found out Tupperware got sell ice cube tray with lid, I purchased it straight away without a second thought & this is how it look like.

But then, do not know where is it because I am petite or what. When the breast milk was frozen in the ice cube tray, I try to twist & turn - it did not manage to come out so easily as I expected. Resulting the edge cube started to melt. After making it twice, the result still the same.

Then I try to put some cool-off boiled water to make ice cube and try to twist n turn, result still the same. But my hubby did it so easy. In short, I do not have enough strength to twist n turn this ice cube tray. Maybe a couple of practice shall make it perfect.

7 signs your child loves you

1. Your newborn stares into your eyes.

  • He's actually working hard to memorize your face. He doesn't understand anything else about the world, but he knows you're important.

2. Your baby thinks about you even when you're not around.

  • Between 8 and 12 months old, he'll start to scrunch his face and look around when you leave the room — and he'll smile when you return.

3. Your toddler throws wicked tantrums.

  • Nope, those screaming fits don't mean he's stopped loving you. He wouldn't be so hurt and angry if he didn't trust you so deeply.

4. Your toddler runs to you for comfort when he falls down or feels sad.

  • Kids this age may not truly understand the meaning of "I love you," but their actions speak louder than words.

5. Your preschooler gives you a flower picked from the garden, a finger-painted heart, a sparkly rock, or another gift.

6. Your preschooler wants your approval.

  • He'll start to be more cooperative around the house, and he'll look for chances to impress. "Look at me!" will become a catchphrase.

7. Your grade-schooler trusts you with secrets, like his first crush or his most embarrassing moment.

  • You're his confidante, even if he shies away from your hugs in public.

My New Freezer

Diet? Weight Control? Weight Loss?

When I was pregnant with my 1st child, I weighted 58kgs when I gave birth to him. I thought it was bad. Then, when I was pregnant with JE, I weighted 60kgs when I was 6 months pregnant. My gynae keeps on saying "Control your food."
I usually weighted about 42-44kgs, so when I was 60kgs, moving around was a problem and worst part is I have another 3 months to go.
What I did was replace my rice with rolled oat & my hubby particular loves this organic oats as he really does not like quaker oat.

So, my lunch & dinner were rolled oats with vegetables, meat, fish & soups. I managed to maintain at 60kgs till I delivered JE. She was 36 weeks & 2 days & weighted 2.84kgs at birth.

I weighted 55kgs on her birth day. On my 6 weeks checkup, I weighted 48kgs. Today, I weighted 45.9kgs and I am still breastfeeding JE. The power of breastfeeding that I slim down so fast & I am SUPER HAPPY about it.......
